Hernia is a common condition in which contents of a hollow organ protrude through a weakness in the wall of the organ. Hernias may occur at different sites. Common varieties include inguinal, incisional, hiatal, umbilical, and sports hernias.
Some individuals are born with hernias at birth, although they may exhibit signs and symptoms later in life. Others acquire hernias during adulthood as a result of wear and tear in their musculature especially if they have active lifestyles.
Thanks to advances in laparoscopic surgery, mesh technology, and surgical instrumentation, patients are now able to undergo hernia surgery with minimal pain and resume activity soon after surgery.
